Alaska peas are a variety of common garden peas or English peas. They are the earliest maturing peas, with pods of 5-7 peas ripening in just 55 days. Peas need to be trellised as they reach 26"-36" high. Heirloom variety.
Culture: Sow directly into loamy soil in the garden in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. Soil pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Sow successive plantings at 3 week intervals until mid spring. Sow mid July to early August for fall harvest. Alaska likes to be in weakly acidic soil.
Harvest: Pick while pods are fully grown, but still tender. Peas will be smooth and starchy, not as sweet as other varieties. Peas should be shelled from pod, to be used fresh, frozen, canned, or dried. Hold vine while picking to avoid damaging it.
Nutrition: A good source of fiber, minerals, vitamins A and C and some of the B vitamins.
